Probability and Statistics - A Look inside the Classroom
Parents and Guardians,

There are several ways in which you can participate in the classroom of your student. If any of the following spark your interest please email me by using the email link on the left hand side of this page.

*** Pose a problem involving statistics
o It might be a problem that you’ve encountered in the workplace. Maybe you have some data and some questions about that data that would give students in our classroom a meaningful look into real problems encountered in a professional endeavor. You do not need to have a solution in order to pose the problem. You might have a solution but we prefer that you withhold it and see if we can meet the challenge. The idea is give students a window into the importance of mathematics in the workplace.
o It might be a problem that you’ve often wondered about and have a hunch that statistics might provide you with an insight.
o Once a problem is posed and assigned to a group of students they may ask you for clarification or present some preliminary strategies for your perusal and comments.
*** Offer to be a guest speaker
o I feel certain there is talent and knowledge in our community of parents/guardians. Students need to see the importance of mathematics coming from someone besides their math teacher.
*** Visit a lecture from our classroom virtually
o There is a link at the bottom of our classroom web page. This link will take you to a series of recent lessons in your child’s classroom arranged by date. Select the lesson you want with its appropriate link. The notes for the class will appear. These notes were written by a student in the classroom, documenting the problems and concepts for the day as we worked through them. What’s more you can click anywhere on the page and hear exactly what was being discussed when that equation or phrase was written! Have your child demonstrate this for you.
