Welcome on Pencil with Kids
Welcome to my classroom
Welcome to our fourth grade classroom. My name is Donna Thompson and I have been teaching for thirty years, twenty-two of which have been with Cincinnati Public Schools. I have a Master's Degree in Elementary Education with a reading endorsement from the College of Mt. St. Joseph.
Fourth grade is a very important year. The students are transitioning from primary to intermediate. They will be expected to be more responsible for their own learning. We want our students to become self-motivators so we encourage them to set short term and long term goals in reading and writing as well as well as maintaining data folders to track their learning.
This year in reading we will be focusing on vocabulary, decoding skills (phonics), and fluency. It is important that someone listens to your child read every night for about 20 minutes. Research shows students who read do better in reading, spelling, vocabulary and writing. So...tell your child to READ! READ! READ!
Your child will also be working in literacy work stations which are stations located in different areas of the room where the students will be practicing with a partner different literary skills they have learned in class. Much of the work they do in class will be done in teams. This is not only an efficient and fun way to learn, but it also teaches students how to work cooperatively with others.
I have an open door policy which means you are welcome at any time to visit your child's classroom after you have checked in with the office. We know how important the connection is between home and school. We invite you to play an active role in your child's education by volunteering to work in the classroom, going on field trips, grading papers etc.
Your child will have homework Monday through Thursday in language arts and math. Ocassionally, they will also have homework in science and social studies. Homework counts as part of your child's grade so it is important to make sure they are completing it every night. There will be a sign off sheet which will verify you have checked over their homework.
The grading scale will be as follows:
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70 -79%
D = 60-69%
F = 59% or below
You may also see a grading scale of 1-4.
4 = A
3 = B
2 = C
1 = D
0 = F
I am looking forward to working with you and your child and having a great year!
