Lab Report Rubric

A Formal Lab Report consists of the following 7 parts:

1. Title – (5 points)
The title should be a short descriptor for the lab.

2. Purpose – (5 points)
The purpose is a one sentence statement that tells why the lab was performed.

3. Hypothesis – (5 points)
The hypothesis is an if…then statement in which you state what you believe will happen when the experiment is performed.

4. Materials – (5 points)
All materials used in the lab experiments are stated in list form.

5. Procedure – (5 points)
The procedure is written as a paragraph that summarizes what was done during the performance of the lab.

6. Data – (10 points)
The data section includes tables, calculations and graphs derived from the experimental results.

7. Conclusion – (15 points)
The conclusion is the most important part of the lab report. It is through the student’s write-up of the conclusion that the teacher is able to assess how well the student understood the concepts covered during the lab. A well written conclusion must address the following questions:
a) What happened?
b) Why did it happen?
c) What went wrong?
d) What could you change the lab?
e) How can you apply what you learned?
