Welcome To The 2008-09 School Year

Welcome To Mrs. Schmidt's Kindergarten

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Kindergarten at Mt. Washington School! My name is Lynn Schmidt and I am your child’s teacher. I am looking forward to providing your child with exciting learning experiences during this first, important school year.

All lessons are based on Ohio’s academic content standards. These identify what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.

Mt. Washington School uses the SRA, Direct Instruction, Reading Mastery series. Each child is tested, and placed at the proper instructional level. In order for every child to benefit from this small group reading instruction, the class is assigned independent seatwork and center activities each day. Please discuss with your child the importance of carefully listening to directions and of working quietly while a reading group is in session. A variety of creative writing and quality literature activities are also provided throughout the year.

Hands-on materials are provided for your child's discovery and exploration through the use of math manipulatives, the Foss Science kits, and the new Houghton Mifflin Social Studies program. Kagan Cooperative Learning structures are used in the classroom to increase student engagement and to reinforce skills in the content areas. The Rosey Reader Program provides the opportunity for you to share high quality, children’s literature with your child every evening. A busy, challenging year is ahead for your child.

I have high expectations for student behavior and achievement. It is my goal to help your child reach his or her highest social and academic potentials, within a safe and caring classroom environment. I am looking forward to working closely with you in this endeavor.

Homework will be assigned to reinforce and extend skills and concepts introduced in the classroom. It will begin in September, after the children have had a few weeks to settle into routines.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns as the year progresses, please feel free to contact me. Notes and e-mail (schmidl@cps-K12.org) are always welcome. You may leave a message with the secretary at 363-3800, or on my classroom phone, 363-3828. I will return your call after school. Please include your phone number and the time you can be reached. If your concerns are urgent, you may contact me at home, in the evening, at 232-0892. Thank you for your cooperation and support. I am looking forward to working with you, to help your child enjoy a successful Kindergarten year.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Lynn Schmidt
