LIFESKILLS PROJECT PARENT INTRODUCTION
During the last two weeks of the course, your child will be required to submit a project titled "Lifeskills". The purpose of this project is to expose your child to real life situations, income managment, job seeking skills, life planning and family planning.

Student will be taught about credit scoring, grocery shopping and the food pyramid, check writing and banking skills.

Your child will have to interact with the public utility companies, phone companies, job employment offices and apartment rental agencies mostly by phone. Your child will be performing actual phone conversations with the above agencies mentioned. They will be calling from class, afterschool in my room or at home. Please help your child as much as possible; however, allow them to make the phone calls and verbally interact with the general public.

Life Management Skills

200 pts



The following assignment will be due on _________________ the assignment will be broken down into 3 parts:

Income assessment 66 pts
Home Economics 66 pts
Decision Making Skills 68 pts



Each section can be typed written or hand written (neatly). Students will be issued a workbook to write notes in or create tables for show. Students who decide to hand write project must complete an additional journal book. (Teacher will handout). A final written draft is due for this section on separate sheets of paper with neatly created charts and written summary for each section.


Section I: Income assessment

Students will be given a job/career. Student must create a job profile. The profile must consist of the following:

Title of Job/Career
Monthly, hourly, weekly and yearly wage
(must be calculated and placed on table)
List any educational or training needed for Job.
Tax bracket (see instructor for calculation)



Once you have received job from instructor, you must stay with job or provide logical explanation why you seek to change job. Discuss with teacher. All information must be written in paragraph format. Except for information requiring charts or tables.
Also discuss any feelings or thoughts about the job or career which was selected (positive and negative). A final written draft is due for this section on separate sheets of paper.



Section II: Home Economics

In this section students will perform the following task according to their own income assessment. Use your income assessment to do the following:

Find a place to live (house, apt or shelter)
Requirements for utility services
Transportation cost (car, bus or taxi)
If have car- find out about car insurance rates
Food Cost and Grocery Planning



Some information maybe presented on a table or chart. Finding a place to live. Student must call agency selling or renting facility and write down contact name of person. Student must answer the following question when calling. See notes in class.
Student will have to figure out cost of monthly and yearly cost and post to a chart.
Student will have to write out in paragraph format any other information which was gathered. Student have to do the same procedure for finding out about utility cost monthly and yearly; transportation cost and grocery bills

If you have to go to the grocery store to get prices do so. Please make sure that you shop for a week or month and select items from the food pyramid chart. Please list out your food selections on a chart or table.
If you are given children or parents/siblings to care for you need to include their needs as well. If you have children, you will need to create a birth record for them. If you are married you will have to create a marriage certificate. All information in this section is written on separate sheets of paper with neatly created charts.



Section III: Decision Making Skills

Students will be given three different life situations. Students will have to write a five paragraph essay on what decisions were made. Students will have to state three alternative decisions and three consequences of those choices. Students must also give final thoughts and a summary their experiences with the project. Please make sure you are following the Decision making model. (see your notes and handouts)
