Fifth graders at Fairview face many new challenges. Not only must they assume greater responsibility in accomplishing assignments independently but also must do so while having a different teacher for each subject area. Gifted and talented students generally welcome this change as they are ready for more focused study and appreciate diversity in teaching and learning styles.

In the gifted and talented program this year fifth graders will be called upon to develop research and writing skills to a higher level of mastery. Our main focus will be to communicate understandings effectively using a variety of mediums. While social studies topics will be our primary focus, they will not be our only area of endeavor as other topics will be broached.

Fifth graders have the opportunity to participate in a variety of clubs that I sponsor, such as Chess Club, Brain Bowl (an academic quiz team), Math Competition Club, and Word Power (a new one focusing on the power of extensive vocabularies). At the beginning of the second semester, fifth graders may try out for membership on the staff of the Fairview Times.

Please, check this website for quarterly updates, projects, and due dates. Contact me if you have any questions
(e-mail is best). Thank you.

3rd Quarter Projects:

* Develop skill in completing analogies
* Complete a study on personal learning styles and characteristics using a variety of inventories and organizers.
* Create a powerpoint presentation in which to visually and in writing portray the findings of that personal study (to be shared only with the student and me).
* First-in-Math - minimum of 750 stickers

NOTE: All 5th graders have the opportunity to participate in a social studies enrichment class by passing a pretest on that quarter's unit of study.

During the 3rd quarter the focus of the class is on democratic principles - rights and responsibilities. We will be conducting a study of the struggle for independence in our land with each student then focusing on a specific topic. The project will consist of producing a group newspaper using a variety of learning styles and formats. We hope to impact our world through our work.
