Dear Parents and Students, 29 October, 2009
This year, the Classics Department has decided that our students will be taking the National Latin Exam in early spring. Since it is a Department-wide initiative, this test is a required part of their course.
Some interesting facts about the National Latin exam: * The contest began in 1977, when nearly 6,000 students participated * In 2009, over 137, 000 students participated; over 52,000 awards were given * Students can earn book prizes and scholarships based on performance * Last year, 327 Walnut Hills students took the NLE; 88 earned Gold Medals * Four Walnut Hills students had perfect papers * The NLE includes cultural questions as well as “just grammar” * Most Walnut Hills students score high on NLE
Important Test Facts: Since Walnut Hills students take two years to complete Book One of our series, 7th grade students (or Latin I) take the Introduction to Latin exam; 8th graders (or Latin II) take the Latin I exam. All students at the same level will test on the same day, and testing will take place over two or more days in spring (either late February or mid-March) during the school day.
All students need to submit $4 in cash to their Latin teacher no later than Friday, November 13 in order for tests to be ordered. Receipts will be given to each student as they pay for their test; please check with your student for that paperwork!
Thank you for your prompt attention to this necessary paperwork.
