SEE "Monthly Calendar" page for homework assignments! Be aware that AP assignments are on there, too.

Students and parents should check the CALENDAR web page frequently, PARTICULARLY if they are absent.

This does not preclude the need for one -or more- Latin Study Buddies, as occasionally there will be assignments made spontaneously which will not be on the page immediately. Call your Buddy!

Please be aware that the material on this page will change, sometimes causing alterations in due dates or adding information for grading criteria. CHECK FREQUENTLY, but be aware that this site is superseded by statements made in class. Pay attention!! Occasionally I may not have a chance to update -or the server will be weird- and you may not have been listening in class- a confluence of unfortunate events which can cause unpleasantness. . .

Students at all levels of Latin learning will benefit from frequent reinforcement of vocabulary and forms. Keeping organized lists of vocabulary you still don't know, in addition to required 5x vocabulary assignments and optional flash cards, will aid you significantly in properly learning the words you need to know. TAKE INITIATIVE in making a list of each word you meet which you SHOULD know! (WRITE it down, LOOK it up, and LEARN IT! The words don't go away!)

ALL STUDENTS at all levels SHOULD WRITE DOWN WORDS THEY DO NOT RECOGNIZE, THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, AS AN INDIVIDUALIZED VOCABULARY REVIEW LIST. Many of you have low scores NOT because you "can't do Latin" but because your vocabulary base is weak. It will make you happy to be able to cross words off the list when you have learnt them well! It will make me happy to see your scores rise, and your folks as well! Keep your list short (in reality not because you aren't keeping one!) and your average will go higher. . .

In the same way, a comprehensive knowledge of noun/adjective forms (declensions) and verb forms (conjugations) are essential to being able to "put it all together." THIS WORK IS NOT "BEYOND" ANY ONE OF YOU!

There is a pair of computer drill programs available at school (Latin Flash Drill, Latin Vocab Drill) which some students have found helpful, or you might want to create your own using Flash!, PowerPoint, or some similar program. Students have also found attaching their flash cards together with rings so they can be manipulated is helpful, or even making MP3 files and listening to the carefully-pronounced vocabulary words. . .

PARENTS (grandparents, siblings) can drill their students in forms and vocabulary whether they have ever studied Latin or any other language or not. Your involvement is important! Having your student "teach" you the material is an excellent way for them to reinforce while you learn something new, too!

Likewise, you will need to keep on top of word forms; if you can't decode the form, you won't be able to use the word properly in the sentence. Some students find writing sets of forms over and over to be effective; others post them all over walls where they are likely to see them frequently; some find music a good way to remember.

Forms and vocabulary are an area which you can- and should- drill and correct yourself. DO NOT WAIT until you are taking or getting back a quiz to say, "Oh, I guess I should have studied that more!"

Quizzes always look the same! Vocabulary is quizzed separately, about 3 days into a chapter; an English meaning is given and the student is required to supply the rest of teh "data set" from the 5x assignment. Any new grammar/forms, plus translations (English and Latin)of sentences we have seen (and 95% of the time, corrected together in class) are the basis of the other (G&T, grammar & translation) quiz. All sentences on a quiz will have been seen, and corrected, in class.

The best way to get better at reading is to read. We will be doing quite a lot of reading! You need to take good notes and review!

Keep up with your assignments, ask "real" questions when you are confused, pay attention in class, and have a sense of humor.

*Reminder: Assignments are worth TWENTY-FIVE PERCENT of your quarter grade, and you have to have most of them complete (at least 22/25 points earned) according to that type of assignment's format in order to drop one at the end of the quarter. . . DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!

*Reminder: COPYING or giving someone else your work to copy is CHEATING and will earn you a zero and an office referral- Please keep up with your assignments; they are usually published several days in advance.

*Reminder: If you are absent you need to turn in your assignments on the day you return. The only exception is the rare assignment not included on the Quarter Calendar OR not posted in the classroom before the absence. Quizzes or tests missed need to be made up- or at least scheduled- on the day you return. . . EMAIL or call if you'll be out more than 2 days, so any alternative arrangements can be made.

*REMEMBER that I cannot return telephone messages when there are students in the room, in order to protect you privacy. There are usually kids in here from about 6.45 (when you'd want want me phoning anyway!) until the end of the activity period, at least 4 days per week. EMAIL IS EASIER! I do try to return phone calls during lunch (again, kids!) and won't often get messages left in the afternoon. Remember that make-ups need to happen before school (7-7.30) or during your lunch time (bring your lunch!).
Study hall can work too.

*Reminder: Nothing Ever Goes Away in Latin; Everything is Cumulative (including quizzes and tests). REVIEW EVERY DAY! Improvement counts, so all is not lost! It's really never too late to begin turning over a new leaf.

*Reminder: You can't think properly if you're hungry or sleepy. Eat a decent breakfast every day (not pop-tarts and coffee) and sleep 8 hours or more.

LATIN IS FUN!

Override contracts are available for students who have not been successful in Latin during the first semester. Parent and student attendance at a teacher conference is required for completion of the contract, which must be completed by close of classes on Friday, January 23 (3 weeks into second semester). Be aware that conference times can book up rather quickly; Please contact me via email if you are interested.
