Textbook: Modern World History: Patterns of Interaction, Beck, Black, Kreiger, Naylor, & Shabaka

Course Description
The primary purpose of this course is to develop in the student an understanding of and appreciation for the heritage of the past. This course includes a survey of world events from 1500 A.D. to the present. A careful examination of the factors influencing mankind’s development, of basic inventions, discoveries, beliefs, and how they contributed to advancements in civilization provide the core of this course. Comparative studies of major revolutionary movements, the development of the modern nation-state, industrial and technological advances, colonialism, and imperialism will be included. Critical thinking and writing skills will be emphasized, along with historical research and analysis skills.

Grading Policies
1.* Your grade will be based on points earned in three weighted categories:
Homework (40%) will be assigned on a regular basis. We will average 1-2 graded assignments each week. Skill-based projects, such as maps and displays will be included in this scoring category.

Quizzes (25%) are unannounced and generally cover material from the previous 1-3 day period. Topics include class lectures, readings, videos, and homework. Students should review notes, homework papers, and reading assignments at least once before coming to the next class in preparation for a quiz.

Tests (35%) generally cover material from the previous 1-2 week period. Tests emphasize concepts and the ability to explain or support concepts and theories. A syllabus identifying the test date for each unit will be distributed each quarter. Writing projects, such as formal essays will be included in this scoring category. All assignments, quizzes, and tests will be based upon total points within each weighted category. The following scale will apply to your average: 90 – 100 = A, 80 – 89 = B, 70 – 79 = C, 60 – 69 = D.

2. Quizzes and tests will vary in point value. In cases of excused absences, an opportunity to make-up quizzes and tests will be given on each Tuesday after school in Room 134. All quizzes and tests must be made up within two make-up days. The makeup quiz or test value will be set at the curve value for the missed quiz or test.

3. You are responsible for any assignments missed due to class absence for any reason. Make-up work will be accepted up to the number of days of excused absence, for full credit. Make-up work for unexcused absences will be accepted as being late. Students with a late arrival, early dismissal, or school-sponsored absence must turn in materials upon arriving to school or before leaving school in order to avoid the late penalty.

4. Work is usually collected and turned in at the beginning of class. Work turned in after this time will be considered late. Students who arrive after work has been collected must have a note (excused) in order to avoid the late penalty. Late work will be accepted (a 20% penalty is assessed for each day late). At the end of the quarter, students who are within 1% of the next highest letter grade will earn that grade if all work has been completed by the last student day of the quarter. All work must have your name on it. No name, no credit, NO EXCEPTIONS.

5. Plagiarism or cheating of any kind will result in a zero for the work involved, for all involved.

6. The use of cell phones or other electronic devices during a quiz or a test will result in a zero on the quiz or test.

* Please note: I am considering using Power Teacher, the new on-line CPS grading program. If I use this program, it may necessitate discontinuing grade weighting practices. I will keep you posted.
