Fifth Grade at Kilgour
Welcome to the fifth grade at Kilgour School! I teach reading, language arts and social studies to all the fifth grade students at Kilgour. We study many exciting concepts through projects that integrate all three subjects. We begin the year with a project about National Parks while learning about geography and Native Americans throughout the United States. Later in the year we begin to understand the Underground Railroad through a living history program at Camp Campbell Gard. We write about our experiences as a runaway slave trying to reach Canada and freedom. At the end of the school year each fifth grade student does intense research on one of the fifty states in the United States. We learn about the state symbols, the history of the state, as well as famous people that contributed to our history. Fifth grade is a busy year of learning with great literature too. Some of the novels we read are: Strider by Beverly Cleary Stone Fox by John Gardiner The BFG by Roald Dahl North By Night by Katherine Ayers The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare These books not only teach us about new people, places and time periods; they also help us to better understand ourselves. |
