Third Grade Math and Science send me an e-mail Welcome to Third Grade! I teach Math and the Science to the students in Homerooms 306 and 308. I work with your child for two periods each day. We have a great deal to accomplish and so our time together is always very busy and filled with learning activities.
Supplies your child will need for this school year are: 3 dozen number 2 pencils 2 boxes of tissues 2 rolls of paper towels a bottle of liquid hand sanitizer a book bag
In both math and science we will focus on becoming experts at finding answers to questions. We will do this by becoming comfortable using various types of problem solving techniques. We will discover that there is usually more than one way to solve a problem and find the correct answer.
Your child will have homework in math every evening that should take him or her about thirty minutes to complete. Since your child will also have about thirty minutes of reading homework each evening there will be no science homework. Your child will have practiced the math skills in class before they bring home a homework assignment. Parents are encouraged to help children by checking over completed work but are not expected to be teaching children skills or completing the work.
At the end of each week your child will bring home a Weekly Report that will help keep you informed about your child's academic and social performance. We have found this to be a good way to insure ongoing communication between home and school. We ask that you go over the report with your child and then sign and return it the next school day (usually Monday).
Our third grade math curriculum is very rigorous with numerous skills to master in a fairly short amount of time. Third graders are expected to apply the computation skills they focused on in earlier grades. Our focus this year is not on computation but developing and applying a real "number sense".
We have a very rich standards based science program where science kits focused on completing hands-on investigations are accompanied by quality informational reading materials. This year third graders will work with three different units. Our three topics are "Earth Materials", "Balance and Motion" and Structures of Life".
