| Oh, the places we'll go!! |
|
I will be responsible for the Reading portion of the Language Arts Program. Decades of research has shown that students who read more read better. Daily time to read in school is not an "extra" or a waste of time, rather,it is actually one of the best ways for your child to learn new vocabulary and information, increase speed and fluency, improve comprehension, notice authors' writing styles, devleop a greater interest in reading and learning, and finally, develop a love of reading. Therefore, a valued part of our reading program will be daily quiet time during which students read books of their own choosing. During that time, I will be monitoring your child's reading development through individual reading conferences.

| Books Take You Places! |

Children reading together, independently, with the whole groups; students talking and writing about their learning and reading; students THINKING!
Comprehension • Through texts of all genres (fiction, informational, poetry, etc.) students will grow in understanding what they read, and to reflect on their own learning. • Students will learn specific reading strategies to help them go more deeply into a book. • Students will read social studies sources and texts for content area learning. • We will study the testing format as a genre so that students are comfortable and confident when taking the high-stakes state tests. Fluency • A fluent oral reader reads smoothly and with good phrasing and expression, rather than speed. • Reader’s Theatre, poetry, and other recitations will help the students enjoy reading orally and grow in confidence.
