"The Great Gatsby" has been rated the number two most popular novel of the English language in the 20th century by the American Library Association [guess what was number one? Hint: It was by a certain Irish writer]. "Gatsby" is memorable for many reasons, but three things stand out to this English teacher: Fitzgerald's use of first person narration(reliable or unreliable?), his development of clever extended metaphors (reader beware of "The Eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg") and his impeccable prose (including the memoralbe last two sentences of the novel). Enjoy! Unit overview for GATSBY 2010 |
