J.D. Salinger's acclaimed and admired (not to mention cult following) novel--his only novel!--"The Catcher in the Rye" certainly has a witty, if not subversively funny protagonist (Holden Caulfield), but underneath the charm and humor lies a serious tone. Reader beware: You might be smiling or chuckling or laughing out loud, but just a quickly, you might find yourself tearing up, too.
